What is childbirth hypnosis?
Although the media purports childbirth hypnosis to be something exclusive to privileged celebrities, it’s actually becoming pretty commonplace in today’s delivery room. Women who use childbirth hypnosis successfully are not special! They’ve made a choice to explore the mind-body connection and have harnessed the natural state that is hypnosis (i.e. daydreaming, going on “auto-pilot” while doing an activity, falling asleep but not quite there yet), in order to change the perception of the sensations they are feeling. It’s a natural state of being that we already experience many times a day. Have you ever been so engrossed in reading a book or watching TV that you didn’t hear someone in the room trying to get your attention? If so, you’ve been in a state of hypnosis.
The hallmarks of Hypnobabies childbirth hypnosis are:
- Relaxation; there is a depth of relaxation that is only possible through hypnosis. This level of relaxation is a learned skill that should be practiced a lot during pregnancy. It is used during labor/contractions; in between contractions, moms generally choose to be active.
- Eyes-open childbirth hypnosis. Hypnobabies does not require that women remain still and listen intently to mp3s/CDs. You remain completely in control during all practice sessions and your baby’s birth, able to move around and communicate as desired.
- The facilitation of a positive change in perception. We begin to experience the benefits of hypnosis during pregnancy by improving our mindset about birth, releasing fears and building confidence within ourselves that we will choose this joyful approach to childbirth.
If you like the idea of using childbirth hypnosis to experience pregnancy and birth in a positive, comfortable way (and really, who doesn’t have that goal?), then congratulations on making a truly life-changing discovery!
